Raw Food and Being Mindful
Life is an interesting journey. You could think of it as a road that stretches out behind us as far as we can see and also has an unlimited expanse before us. Every day we walk down the road. But is the road really straight? And are we just walking along, step after step, so worried about putting one foot in front of the other and accomplishing our daily tasks that we never lift up our heads to look around?
In reality, that road resembles a tree branch. You are traveling down one path and you come to a fork in the road. A choice is made, whether it be the easy path or the harder one. Your life takes on an entire new direction.
Our lives become a record of the paths that we have taken. Some of these paths lead us up very steep, rocky slopes. Some take us down beautiful, green sloping hills. The terrain is always changing, and there are new paths to choose, new territory to cover.
None of us set out to choose the hard path. But sometimes, the harder paths are the path where we grow the most. Just as our bodies respond to exercise and get stronger, we benefit from the mental exercise that comes from all that hill climbing. We emerge stronger from the exertion.
Sometimes, we realize that the path we are about embark upon is going to be a steep and rocky one, but we are compelled to go. Something inside of us knows that it is the right place for us to be, whether to learn one of life’s lessons or to experience the beauty that can only be appreciated after making that hard journey.
Even on the more difficult path, there is beauty all around us. Gems, strewn about the path. Some hidden, some right in front of us. How do we make sure we are not missing the gems? We become present.
One way to become present is eating and preparing more food in it’s natural, raw state. Instead of just opening a package and dumping it into a bowl, preparing raw food provides us with an opportunity to experience our food. We see, smell and touch real food. We learn to appreciate the beauty of nature. We may spend a little more time but with a little extra “exertion”, we are rewarded with healthy, nutrient rich food that fuels our bodies and clears our minds. The best part is as we continue to walk this path, it gets easier. And the gems shine from within.
