Your whole food, plant-based life.

Listen to Your Body

This morning, I started writing a blog post about raw food diets and minerals. But I got distracted. Minerals and raw food will have to wait. Something much more interesting happened today and I want to share with you.

I was up quite early and decided to run down to the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market. As you know. it is one of my favorite Sunday haunts. Getting there early, before the shoulder to shoulder crowd was a gift. I had the room and the time to absorb the wonderful colors and textures surrounding me. I received another gift this morning. The gift of listening to my body and asking what it needed. I was amazed at the clarity of the answers.

The market was alive today. The herbs, bedding plants and greens have now been replaced by hundreds of cucumbers, eggplant, onions, garlic, melons, sweet corn and carrots along with many other exotics grown by the local farmers. It was dazzling.

As is my usual custom, I started my first trip through. I always walk through twice. On the first pass, I take pictures. I need to be in the moment, searching for shapes, colors, compositions. The second time I buy all of the wonderful things that I book-marked the first time through. Something interesting happened today. As I approached some beautiful, fresh corn (a favorite) I felt a strange rejection. I stopped and took note. It was so loud, I had to listen.

I was so intrigued by this response, I decided to take a minute and instead of just buying what what my mind and eyes were telling me to buy, I simply asked my body what it wanted. The answers were loud and clear. I ended up coming home with an entirely different collection of fruits and vegetables than I thought I would. Not what I thought I “wanted” but apparently what I needed!

The simple asking of the question, asking my body instead of reacting to what my mind thought it wanted was an interesting and fun experience. I came home with an entirely different collection of fruits and vegetables than I thought I would! I can’t wait to get in the kitchen and start creating raw food recipes!

Thank you for sharing! I try to listen to my body as much as I can. I usually eat salads or citrus fruits in the evening, but tonight I really craved bananas. So I ate one. Still hungry, still craving. Ended up eating 2 more bananas and I am now completely 100% satisfied! I guess my body was low on nutrients that are found in bananas, like potassium.

Susan, this is very interesting–I had been feasting on lots of corn and cucumbers, since they have been abundant in the farmer’s markets. But both of them are things I have had dreams about in the past (I have very vivid dreams with lots of health and nutrition advice) telling me not to eat them. Pretty sure I am allergic to corn which isn’t that unusual, although I would think that the raw form would be less….’bad’ …. I do try to check in with my higher guidance when shopping to see what I should get…do a kinesiology test that probably draws some double takes at the Wedge..:) it’s interesting to see what comes up as a ‘yes’. Sometimes I just get what calls to me though. It’s a constantly evolving journey, even the allergies can shift esp. when eating raw/healthy. But I have decided to skip the corn, did get some more cukes though yesterday because they are so good, and I feel the small farmer’s market ones are easier to digest than the typical year round ones.

I love that you are hearing your inner guidance. In 1983, I found a book written by Dorothy MacLean, “To Hear The Angels Sing”. It has totally empowered my life in the direction you are describing and you may love it. She was one of the founding members of Findhorn. Blessed be.

I know it’s good to listen to your body, and that’s awesome that you did! I seem to have trouble listening to mine though…my mind always takes over. I guess it takes practice to actually listen to your body and give it what it’s asking for? I don’t eat raw, but I am a vegan. I do incorporate some raw dishes in my diet though. I tried a version of your cashew cheese over the weekend, and it was AWESOME!!!

That is one thing about being raw vegan…your body is clarified to let you know what it is craving. For me, lately its been mad for oranges & orange juice. LOL. It’s nice to be able to listen. And I don’t crave as much food compared to being on a SAD, but yet I am just as full. Go figure. Which has me realizing that the additives in a SAD (high fructose corn syrup, MSG, etc…) have addictive qualities (article confirmed my personal thoughts).

I LOVE this. I too listen to my body. It wants a week of avo dishes, I do it. Then if I don’t eat another avo for a few months, that’s okay. Sometimes I’ve craved cilantro (must be the metallic cleansing). Seasonally too. I eat seasonally. Lighter in the summer and heavier in the winter. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
