Monday Give Away: UrthBag!
Monica Ralli, founder of UrthBags, has sent us this beautiful “Angelina” recycled magazine handbag for our Monday give away! UrthBags are the Eco-Chic handbags made with the health of the planet in mind. I have one of these little beauties sitting on the kitchen table, and believe me, it is fantastic.
Monica has always tried to live a sustainable life by recycling everything possible, shopping locally at farmers markets, avoiding toxic chemicals by choosing organic, etc. Looking in her closet one evening filled with handbags, purses, totes, gym bags, etc., She thought to herself, why couldn’t these same, stylish designs be made from salvaged, recycled & discarded materials? After much researching, sourcing materials, locating and organizing women’s groups, she created UrthBags Eco-Chic Handbags.
Monica also follows a predominantly raw diet and has for over 20 years. She strongly advocate consuming sustainable, fresh food diet that is as close to its natural state as possible. Sisterhood!
This beautiful bag’s retail value is 72.00. Thank you Monica!

My family and I volunteer at our local Food Bank. We help distribute food that is still good (but would normally go to waste from the store it came from) and usable to families and individuals that can use them. We give cooking (including RAW cooking) tips to families who ask for help and we encourage everyone to recycle –including sharing food with others.

I have been trying to (a) not acquire grocery store bags and (b) find new uses for them since they are too thin to recycle. And I make a big stink in the stores about how folks should be using paper and not plastic.
I have manage to decrease my wardrobe to 1/3 of what it used to be. I am very proud of this.
I don’t drive unless I have to (and I have a relatively new car).
I purchase food from local gardeners.
I am really trying….
Peace

My favorite way to be green is reusing glass bottles and jars. I use them for everything. I also like to reuse old bags and purses to wrap gifts in. They make unique gift bags and packaging!

my favorite way to be more green is to buy local produce whenever possible. it tastes better, supports the local farmers and gives me a sense of connection to my food!

Just reusing things that you already have and not buying more and finding different uses for stuff then they were originally designed for…. example would be using an old wooden apple box for a bookshelf or an old trunk for a coffee table. The main idea is not to buy more stuff, but continue to use the stuff that you already have around. :o)
Thanks for the contest…the bag is so cute!

I LOVE this idea! I am constantly looking for opportunities to recycle and reuse the materials that come into my apartment. They are small things, but my roommate and I re-use our plastic shopping bags as trash bags around our apartment and use cloth towels rather than an abundance of paper towels.
I am trying to figure out how we can compost as we go through TONS of refuse every day, but I have yet to come up with a good alternative as we live in an apartment and have limited budgets to purchase indoor composting contraptions. Do you have any ideas how we could compost given our situation?
We also really enjoy using candle around our apartment and keeping the windows open rather than AC when possible.
You make my Mondays so much more enjoyable, I have loved seeing all these products and hearing how other people are contributing to a cleaner planet, so thanks!

Turning off the A/C at night and opening the windows, reusing grocery bags & using cloth ones, recycling paper, plastic, cans, cardboard, unplugging appliances when not in use, replacing incandescent bulbs w/flourescents and reducing the amount of items we consume.
