Monday Give Away: UrthBag!

Monica Ralli, founder of UrthBags, has sent us this beautiful “Angelina” recycled magazine handbag for our Monday give away! UrthBags are the Eco-Chic handbags made with the health of the planet in mind. I have one of these little beauties sitting on the kitchen table, and believe me, it is fantastic.

Monica has always tried to live a sustainable life by recycling everything possible, shopping locally at farmers markets, avoiding toxic chemicals by choosing organic, etc.  Looking in her closet one evening filled with handbags, purses, totes, gym bags, etc., She thought to herself, why couldn’t these same, stylish designs be made from salvaged, recycled & discarded materials?   After much researching, sourcing materials, locating and organizing women’s groups, she created UrthBags Eco-Chic Handbags.

Monica also follows a predominantly raw diet and has for over 20 years. She strongly advocate consuming sustainable, fresh food diet that is as close to its natural state as possible. Sisterhood!

This beautiful bag’s retail value is 72.00. Thank you Monica!

I try to think twice before I buy something new and ask myself if I really need it. These days I give away more than I buy and I try to stick to my general rule of throwing (i.e. giving away to a 2nd hand charity store) before I buy something new.
Of course I recycle, but apart from recycling I also try to re-use containers as much as possible. Glass jars and bottles are great for storing nuts, seeds etc and makes them so much easier to find in the cupboard. I live in a small apartment in a cold climate, but always grow some edible plants like different kinds of lettuce, herbs, cherry tomatoes and even kale.

my husband and i take one day of the week to take care of errands: groceries, stop at target, dog food, etc-by doing this we save tons on gas and we have an extra day off to spend together doing whatever we please!

To be more green I breastfeed my 13 month old son! Breastfeeding saves food resources, fuel and energy. No packaging is required and no chemicals are needed for preparation or sterilising bottles and teats. 🙂

Composting is my favorite way to help Mother Earth! All kitchen scraps are utilized as well as garden and mowing…not much mowing anymore as most of my yard is GARDENS…another plus for our ecosystem!!

my favorite way to be green right now is that I’ve been donating everything that is shippable and re-useable to Haiti. clothes at our house are totally recycled this way, toys, books, canned foods….you name it, i’m working on ways to ship to Haiti. I’m sponsoring some orphanages, one new one already being built in Peurto Plata in the Dominican Republic, and my newest project in Phaeton, Haiti. Literally the orphans in Phaeton are lucky to eat 1-3X per week….generally 1. Has given an entirely new perspective to our house, what we use, how we recycle EVERYTHING!!!!!!

I love to repurpose old items! Why get rid of something when you can use it in another way?

Composting is really big at our home now,we take our pineapple tops and plant them and have a beautiful pineapple plantation started with 23 pineapple plants and counting. All seeds are planted avocado, dates, apple and what ever else we eat. Crossing fingers and hoping for some new life to sprout!

My favorite way to be green is sewing out t-shirts into reusable grocery bags!
