Saw-Whet Owls and The Dirty Dozen

Spring is coming! Seriously, it’s only around the corner. Although, in Minnesota, the corner can project into April some years! We are enjoying a bit of a heat wave in Minneapolis. It has been in the 40’s for a few days. We might even hit 50 tomorrow! After months of brutal cold and feet of snow, the warm up feels good.

One of the indicators that spring is coming at my house is the appearance of Saw-Whet owls. This little beauty is roosted in the cedar tree, right outside my front door. I have cedars that surround my house and the Saw-Whet owls love them. They also love mice. I often am alerted to their presence by droppings and the mouse pellets that appear on the ground. When I see these indicators, I look up and sure enough, there is a little Saw-Whet looking back down at me!

The Dirty Dozen

I have also noticed that as the air warms, so does my appetite for pure, raw food. I am starting to crave salads, not soups. Just clean fresh food. It is amazing how much the weather affects what I want to eat! It is a really good time to re-educate ourselves as to what fruits and vegetables we really should be buying organic and which ones are more “clean”. The Environmental Working Group has published a great guide to the 12 worst (most pesticide contaminated) and the 15 best (least contaminated). You can find there pdf download here: Dirty Dozen

The owl is gorgeous! Congrats on the upcoming book. I have just made a mental note to keep an eye open for this one. It must be added to my collection of raw food books.

What a beautiful creature, the Saw-Whet owl is. Amazing!

I agree with you, I’ve noticed my craving for salads over soups recently too. The sun has come out a few days here and there and when it does I really notice the difference in what my body craves đŸ™‚
