Dehydrator Giveaway!

The time has come to do our first giveaway and is it ever a good one! Many raw food recipes require a dehydrator and if you don’t have one, it can be challenging. One of the most common questions I get is how to prepare the raw food recipes without a dehydrator. I hope to fix that problem for one of you!

The great folks over at TSM Dehydrators have donated a 300.00, 5 shelf, stainless Dehydrator, the D5! I couldn’t be happier to be able to offer this! I have one of these dehydrators. It is my favorite. It is quiet, sturdy, very easy to pull apart and clean and does a great job at temperature control. I have checked. Continue for the rules!

Here are the rules:

Enter by simply asking a question you have about raw food in the comment area.

Only one entry allowed per person.

Entries will close at 6pm on Thursday, March 18th, 2010.

Winner will be randomly selected and announced following the contest.

I will be answering your questions in upcoming blog posts!

ToRo be considered raw, foods cannot be heated over 115 degrees Farenheight. However, I have heard that in order to speed up dehydrating time, many raw chefs begin their dehydrators at tempertaures over 115 and then reduce once the actual food temperature (as opposed to the air temperature) has reached 115. Are there any downsides to this practice with respect to preserving the enzymes of the food or does differentating between air temps and food temps keep the same nutritional benefits as dehydrating the food for longer periods at lower temperatures?

I wait tables for a living in a non-vegan/vegetarian restaurant and sometimes work up to 6 hours straight with no break, what is something raw that will fill me up and keep me going during this work day?

When a recipe calls for soaked nuts, let’s say cashews, are the measurements for pre-soaked or post-soaked?

I have two and a half questions:
    1) In a pinch, can we substitute roasted nuts for soaked nuts? Is there a significant loss of nutritional value?
    2) I love your sprouted raw garbanzo bean falafel and sprouted quinoa was amazing. What other beans/grains are okay to eat sprouted but raw? Like, could we try sprouted buckwheat or sprouted aduki beans?
2A) Are there any grains or beans that we should absolutely NOT eat raw?
