Monday Give Away: UrthBag!

Monica Ralli, founder of UrthBags, has sent us this beautiful “Angelina” recycled magazine handbag for our Monday give away! UrthBags are the Eco-Chic handbags made with the health of the planet in mind. I have one of these little beauties sitting on the kitchen table, and believe me, it is fantastic.

Monica has always tried to live a sustainable life by recycling everything possible, shopping locally at farmers markets, avoiding toxic chemicals by choosing organic, etc.  Looking in her closet one evening filled with handbags, purses, totes, gym bags, etc., She thought to herself, why couldn’t these same, stylish designs be made from salvaged, recycled & discarded materials?   After much researching, sourcing materials, locating and organizing women’s groups, she created UrthBags Eco-Chic Handbags.

Monica also follows a predominantly raw diet and has for over 20 years. She strongly advocate consuming sustainable, fresh food diet that is as close to its natural state as possible. Sisterhood!

This beautiful bag’s retail value is 72.00. Thank you Monica!

With a family of 5 we are always buying groceries. I never use plastic bags, only reusable bags. I not only use them for groceries; I use them for library books and when I go to the mall I bring one for my purchases there! I also use a reusable travel cup for my coffee now.

My favorite is easily using my reusable water bottle – not only green, but saves lots of money!

    Such a cute bag!

Sadly, I can’t compost because here in Woodstock, the bears would tear it apart. But I carry shopping bags with me everywhere. Use reusable straws (because I use straws every day and that would be a big pile of landfill). When I’m in Brooklyn, I take a lot of public transport, and walk whenever possible, and when I drive, thank goodness my car has amazing gas mileage. I use reusable thermos cups for to-go coffee. I use green cleaning products, or just vinegar and water, and I buy as much locally grown food as possible. When I leave Woodstock to go to the city, I unplug all my appliances except the fridge, to keep from wasting electricity via “ghosting”. Oh, and I only wash huge, full loads of laundry. All small things I know, but I hope they add up!

We walk and ride our bikes everywhere we can including taking our daughter to school even though she could ride the bus. We reuse every glass container we have in a variety of ways including food storage, as vases and supplies containers for craft projects or fasteners (nuts, bolts, screws, nails, etc.) and anything else we can come up with. We support our local Goodwill by buying assorted clothing items that I then make into reusable shopping bags and totes. And, yes it’s true, I’ve converted my husband into a trash picker. Hey, when there’s a perfectly good side-table (so what if it’s missing a leg) out with somebody’s garbage and he knows I’d never be able to let it go to the dump, well, then he just has to haul it home (even though it’s extremely awkward because he’s pulling our daughter in a wagon at the time). I also take recycleables from my friend’s house to my own to recycle because I just can’t get her to do and it makes me want to cry when I see a plastic bottle in her trash.

Actively composting, recycling, combining trips, car pooling, using public transportation as much as possible, and encouraging others to do all of these things.
Thank you, as always, for the great site!

I try to be as green as possible. In my city, I’m lucky enough that I don’t need a car to get around. I walk whenever possible, and if need be, I take public transit…but I do not own or use a car. I also buy/make eco friendly cleaning and personal care products whenever possible. I feel so much better when I’m not inhaling and ingesting toxic chemicals, or damaging the environment with said chemicals.

Oh, and I ONLY use Vinegar and Water (or Lemon) as a cleaning solution. Haven’t bought cleaners in years! Works great and smells better!
