Raw Ingredients

My daughter called from Colorado today. They have had 44″ of snow in the last week. She and her friends “rode pow” all day. I am jealous. We got 8″ of snow and a lot of damaged trees. But I will be out there soon to hit the slopes with her.

Mia and her friends are really into raw food and I am thrilled. Could that make a mother happier? And honestly, I don’t think it was all from me. Time and time again, one of her friends would say, “Rawmazing is your Mom’s site?” She started paying more attention and trying more raw food.

During our phone call she told me that they had made the mashed cauliflower and it didn’t turn out like mine. “But,” she said, the cauliflower didn’t look very good…it was really green.” Ah…the truth comes out.

When we make raw food recipes, we really owe it to ourselves to get the best ingredients we can. Raw food recipes are not as forgiving as cooked food. Cooking can cover many problems, raw will accentuate them. If the food we start with has issues, our finished product will be tainted. You are taking the time to make this beautiful, flavor food, take time to pick out good stuff.

Cooking cleanliness is also important. You really want to wash your produce well. Take good care of it and buy organic when you can. Make sure you are familiar with the top 12 fruits and veggies that are the most pesticide ridden. It is worth consideration getting organic when buying the following:

  1. Celery (the worst)
  2. Peaches
  3. Strawberries
  4. Apples
  5. Blueberries
  6. Nectarines
  7. Bell Peppers
  8. Spinach
  9. Kale
  10. Cherries
  11. Potatoes
  12. Imported Grapes

The winner for this week’s giveaway is CarolC. I will be sending you an email to notify you and get your address for shipping!

One more quick note. It has been a challenging computer week here. I got a new macbook and just as I was getting it set up, the old one crashed. Unfortunately, at the moment, I have no access to the programs that I use to do my photography work. Hopefully this will be resolved tomorrow. I am working very hard to release the Holiday Recipe E-book by Friday. It may come out on the weekend. It is full of amazing raw recipes that everyone will love. Some even start out completely raw, but with the addition of an extra ingredient become an even heartier fare for all.

Celery is the worst? I always thought berries were the worst. Thank for the list!
Dee- I add white vinegar to water to soak veggies and spray individual pieces of fruit with 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide (great for growing sprouts too!). Not sure if it’s the best way or not but it appears to work and is cost effective 🙂

I am really excited about making a mostly raw Thanksgiving! Do you know how bad non-organic cranberries are?

I’m happy to see another New York Stater here, I grew up in Schenectady- and also have fond memories of big snowfalls. Of course, living in St Paul now I’m not too deprived of the white stuff.
I just made a green smoothie and am constantly amazed at how good I feel drinking it! just kale , apples and celery, didn’t have anything fancy, it’s probably better to keep it simple anyway!

44″? Glad I don’t live in Colorado, LOL. Looking forward to the holiday recipe guide – sounds fun!

I am delighted to win the book and you can rest assured that I will read it from cover to cover. Thank you so much.

Now I live in the Piedmont of North Carolina. However I am originally from Syracuse, New York which has been awarded the Golden Snowball for the most snowfall by Paul Harvey a few years in a row. I walked all over the city of Syracuse when I was a kid in many snow storms and truly do miss the the calm and beauty of a good snow fall.

Mia was our daughters’ snowboard instructor last year!
We connected with your blog when my daughter told her we eat raw and then Mia told us about your blog 🙂

Snow makes me happy! I am just east of Colorado, but we have had no snow yet this year. This morning we had a heavy frost and for a minute I thought it had finally snowed!

I’m sorry about your problems with your photos. I lost my camera several months ago. It is so frustrating! I finally started taking pictures from my phone for my blog.
