BBQ Crackers the Raw Food Way
People often ask, “What is the one raw food item that you wouldn’t want to be without?”. For me, it is flat bread and crackers. I always make sure that there is a batch in the cupboard. I never wait for the first batch to be gone before starting a new one. Coming up with new raw food cracker recipes is always a fun challenge. And boy, can these satisfy a craving.
I love this raw food recipe is because of its versatility. Throw on a few veggies or sprouts and you have a healthy snack. They are also great with spreads and make beautiful appetizers. This recipe for BBQ crackers is one of my favorites. They have a great consistency. Not super hard like a lot of the crackers. They have a nice mouth feel.
The crackers are pictured with avocado and tomato, one of my favorite toppings.
Chef’s Tip
Make sure your BBQ spice mix only contains herbs and spices. Many put additives and sugar in them.
BBQ Crackers
MAKES 1.5 TRAYS
- 1 cup Almonds (soaked, dried, ground fine in the food processor)
- 1 cup Raw Oat Flour*
- 1 cup flax
- 2 cups Water
- 2 tablespoons Olive Oil
- 2 tablespoons BBQ Spice Mix
- Place flax seed in the 2 cups water and soak until soft. This will take at least an hour.
- Combine soaked flax seeds with other ingredients, spread about 1/4 ” thick on a non-stick dehydrator sheet. Score into squares. Dehydrate for 145 for 45 minutes (don’t worry, the food never goes above 116 and it helps reduce dehydration time) and then reduce to 115 and dehydrate until dry.

Hi, I live in Poland and raw food concept here is just starting to be known. Most people think that being raw vegan means eating just salads and winter time in Poland it seems insane to do so. But! One could not be more wrong! With all these breads, spreads and sauces you can make out of plants, raw life is just so awesome! Thank you for your recipes, they really saved me from eating traditional bread:-)So, I say the same you said in your post – I could not imagine my raw diet without a flat bread assort handy:-)And they are so fun to make!Blessings!

Umm… do you drain the flax seed or do you need the water in the processor?
Susan wrote on January 7, 2013
There won’t be any water left. The flax seeds will absorb it all. 🙂

I’m curious like zemira approximately how long to dehydrate? Also, it says above that the crackers are not as hard as a normal cracker, can they be compared to something else for finished hardness ? I’ve dehydrated mine for 12 hours and they still seem soft. Thanks.

Yes, me too! I’d like to know what’s in that BBQ spice mix and even the brand name. (I may cave in and order it on line.)
Also, You say “dehydrate until dry.” For those of us who are spanking new to dehydrating, what kind of time frame would this be?
Many thanks!
