Minneapolis Farmer’s Market

Peppers and Bitter Balls at the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market

I have been keeping a secret for a little while. I have been traveling back and forth from Minneapolis to the San Francisco area for the last 4 months in preparation for a move. Actually, half of my stuff was moved out here in May, the other half, this week!

It was wonderful being back home to see my mother and some friends as I packed up the remainder of my belongings. It was a tear-filled 4 days as I sifted through so many memories of my children and my life over the last decade. Now that my daughters are 22 and 26, both living in Colorado, I am struck by how much I miss my “little” girls. Pulling out puzzles, favorite toys and pictures, I find myself longing to hold those darling wee ones. No one warns you that there will be a day when your heart breaks with that longing.

Most of my time home was spent at the house, frantically going through things before the movers got there. I didn’t want to miss anything important, but didn’t want to take much, either. My turning point was finding my oldest daughter’s “Teddy Bear Back Pack”. It is such a touch stone to her child hood. Once that was in hand, I realized I didn’t have everything but I had enough.

I am finding that the Bay Area is a pretty amazing place. The city itself takes my breath away. Walking down the street, I hear at least 5 different languages being spoken. San Francisco has an amazing energy. The BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is impressive in it’s ease of use and scope of travel. The city itself is very walkable.

I am amazed at what is within reach. The ocean, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and wine country to name a few. It is a bit mind-boggling for a girl from the Midwest to see oranges growing on trees and chestnuts falling at my feet. There are many exciting things to discover, and I will bring you right along with me on the blog.

While I was back in Minneapolis I did manage to get to one of my favorite places, The Minneapolis Farmer’s Market. Honestly, it is one of the best farmer’s markets I have ever been to. When something is local, we don’t always realize what a gem it is.

The cabbage in the background were three feet across!

It was a crisp fall morning (my favorite time to visit) and the bounty was plentiful! The prices are unbeatable and it is open 7 days a week! When I lived in Minneapolis, I was at the market 2-3 days a week. It was often my inspiration for my raw recipes. I only had my iphone with but wanted to share some pictures from my visit.

I would love to hear if you shop at a farmer’s market and what you like the most about it!

I couldn’t read without crying the part about the heartbreak and the longing that accompanies our kids growing up. Nope. Nobody warned me about that either, let alone the depth of those emotions. Good luck with your new adventure and here is a quote I try to remember when overcome with these emotions: “If you want to be sad, live in the past. If you want to be anxious, live in the future. If you want to be peaceful, live in the now.” I’m working on that every day! ;0)

I go to the farmers market in Nashville and in Franklin Tennessee. I love going to the farmers market and the thing I love most is that just being in the presence of such beautiful food inspires me! 🙂

So glad you’re here! I live in Oakland, work in SF. I’m a member of raw food meetups in both places. I’d love to meet you in person. Maybe you can come do a class at our meetup groups? Do you know Darcy, Jillian, Amber? Meetup group leaders. We have so much going on here.. I hope to hear from you.

The Minn Farmers Market is amazing looking, but it will be nice to hang up the snow boots, I bet. Good luck in your new digs!

Wow, what a feast of beautiful raw fruit and vegies! No wonder you feel inspired! I am inspired just looking at it! How lucky you are to live near a market with such produce! Hi, my name is Rose and Im from Australia and Ive been to a few farmers markets but Ive never seen one with so much fresh food! The prices you pay are soooo cheap! We pay in Aus $8 kilo for tomatoes and bags of potatoes for $8. A cabbage is $2 for a quarter and they slash the beautiful leaves off. Our prices are so much higher, its not fair! 🙁 But you have inspired me once again with raw food cooking! 🙂 I would Luvvvvvv those cabbage leaves for lunch wraps abd rolls!

wow, never have seen peanuts in any farmer’s markets! I loved going to farmer’s markets in Minneapolis, lived there 29 years…actually rarely went to that big main Mpls one….went a lot to the one at Lake St near the light rail stop. I loved that there was music and some prepared food along with lots of farmers and produce. I have migrated also, to Easthampton Mass. I love the mountains out here and being much closer to my family (upstate NY where I grew up). I go to the Tuesday market in Northampton….similar to the Lake st one, it has a nice open area, music, prepared food, always some craft vendor, bread, lots of produce…I love talking to the people who grew the food, and seeing them every week! Good luck in San Fran! wonder if there are any good raw food restaurants out there?
