Minneapolis Farmer’s Market

Peppers and Bitter Balls at the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market

I have been keeping a secret for a little while. I have been traveling back and forth from Minneapolis to the San Francisco area for the last 4 months in preparation for a move. Actually, half of my stuff was moved out here in May, the other half, this week!

It was wonderful being back home to see my mother and some friends as I packed up the remainder of my belongings. It was a tear-filled 4 days as I sifted through so many memories of my children and my life over the last decade. Now that my daughters are 22 and 26, both living in Colorado, I am struck by how much I miss my “little” girls. Pulling out puzzles, favorite toys and pictures, I find myself longing to hold those darling wee ones. No one warns you that there will be a day when your heart breaks with that longing.

Most of my time home was spent at the house, frantically going through things before the movers got there. I didn’t want to miss anything important, but didn’t want to take much, either. My turning point was finding my oldest daughter’s “Teddy Bear Back Pack”. It is such a touch stone to her child hood. Once that was in hand, I realized I didn’t have everything but I had enough.

I am finding that the Bay Area is a pretty amazing place. The city itself takes my breath away. Walking down the street, I hear at least 5 different languages being spoken. San Francisco has an amazing energy. The BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is impressive in it’s ease of use and scope of travel. The city itself is very walkable.

I am amazed at what is within reach. The ocean, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and wine country to name a few. It is a bit mind-boggling for a girl from the Midwest to see oranges growing on trees and chestnuts falling at my feet. There are many exciting things to discover, and I will bring you right along with me on the blog.

While I was back in Minneapolis I did manage to get to one of my favorite places, The Minneapolis Farmer’s Market. Honestly, it is one of the best farmer’s markets I have ever been to. When something is local, we don’t always realize what a gem it is.

The cabbage in the background were three feet across!

It was a crisp fall morning (my favorite time to visit) and the bounty was plentiful! The prices are unbeatable and it is open 7 days a week! When I lived in Minneapolis, I was at the market 2-3 days a week. It was often my inspiration for my raw recipes. I only had my iphone with but wanted to share some pictures from my visit.

I would love to hear if you shop at a farmer’s market and what you like the most about it!

I love our farmers market here in Minneapolis!! I am glad we can share it with others. I love to wander around the market even if I am not there to purchase anything that day. The feeling I get being around fresh, local produce makes me smile. The people there are great too!

I love you site. I have just started my journey into eating Raw so you blog and site have been very helpful!

I love this post – the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market is truly a gem. It has introduced me to so many new foods and wonderful farmers who have so much heart. I am passionate about spreading the word to others because it something that everyone should experience and nourish their body with. I am so jealous of you living in San Fran though…… it’s my dream to live there. Just visited in August and went to the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market as well as shopping through China town. What a beautiful mecca….. I will get there someday, I know it!

Beautiful Farmers Market (F.M.)!! I live in Calabasas, California and our F.M. is double to triple the prices as your F.M.!! There are about 10 different organic farmers bring in different produce which is wonderful. We have a French bakery that comes in with the most delicious goods however, 1 regular size loaf of bread runs $10 ….I haven’t broken down yet!! I love F.M.’s and buy all my vegetables there every Saturday morning. Our F.M. is year round due to our weather in Ca. We are very lucky.
Thank you for your website! I love all your recipes and look forward to you emails.

How wonderful to see pictures of a farmers market in another part of the world! Living in London, just down the road from the Wimbledon tennis grounds, I am lucky enough to have a farmers market that appears once a week in the playground of my local primary school…… it is great, but the prices are higher than our local supermarkets. I was amazed to see how cheap is in your farmers market! However, the food in the market tastes sooooooo delicious, I always come back laden down with goodies and a huge smile on my face…..
Have fun in your new place!

Serendipity – what grace! I have recently become acquainted with Rawmazing and absolutely love everything about this site and blog. But today, with the post and comments regarding letting go of our adult children, I’m blown away by a sense of connection. My 24 year-old son left our town of Bloomington, Indiana two weeks ago for San Francisco. He is drawn to the energy, the arts, the vibrancy of the SF area and is on his Journey. He was diagnosed with systemic lupus 6 years ago and the one thing that has allowed him to thrive and flourish enough to follow this dream to the Bay Area is his change in diet and nutrition. He has been gluten and dairy free for over a year and his inflammation process is greatly reduced – and has allowed him to get off most of his medications. He just found a place to live yesterday and two blocks away is a Farmer’s Market. He is in heaven – and, so am I. My grieving at his physical departure is softened by the knowledge that he is ready to embark on his Life to its fullest capacity. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to connect the dots between food, health and love.

Jan, Thank you so much for writing. What a wonderful journey your son is starting on. And remember, there is always Skype. My own mother is experiencing the same grieving process at my leaving Minneapolis and she is in her 80’s! It never gets easier.

Susan, had to write. My daughter is 25 this year and I’m finally getting over it. It’s always a tug in one’s heart and when fall comes — it always reminds us of the school years, the books, the back packs, the carpooling, the dance lessons or whatever and that’s over now. I don’t blame you for moving to a beautiful new city! San Francisco is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Be safe and happy! As for me, I stayed in MSP and got remarried which helps but it doesn’t take away the ache of our missing little ones.
